    Description

Here we have a nice, framed Civil War print by Don Troiani entitled “The High Watermark” that is in excellent condition. The print depicts the apex of Pickett’s charge on the hot afternoon of July 3, 1863 with Confederate Brigadier General Lewis A. Armistead (holding the sword with his black hat on top) leading the men of his brigade over the stone wall at "The Angle" and momentarily capturing Brevet Major Alonzo Cushing's Battery “A” of the 4th U.S. Light Artillery. Armistead’s was the only Confederate brigade to breach the Union line before they were pushed back in hand-to-hand fighting along the stone wall. Armistead was mortally wounded shortly after the moment depicted in the print. He led the attack into the men of II Corps commanded by Major General Winfield S. Hancock, who was one of Armistead's closest friends prior to the war. Had Hancock not been wounded just a few yards away moments before the breach, they may have personally stood before one other on the field. Armistead would die two days later in a field hospital, failing to fulfill his greatest wish … that of having met with his long-time friend whom he had not seen since the war began. The print itself measures 7¼ x 5½ inches with the frame measuring 12½ x 11¾ inches. A lovely illustration ready to hang on the wall.
