Wade Hampton during the Civil War
Wade Hampton III (March 28, 1818 – April 11, 1902) was a
Confederate States of America
military officer during the
American Civil War
and politician from
South Carolina
. He came from a wealthy planter family. During the American Civil War,
Hampton was a natural cavalryman—brave, audacious, and a superb horseman.
He was one of only three
officers without previous military experience,
to achieve the rank of
lieutenant general
in the Confederate Army
,
the others being
Nathan Bedford Forrest
and
Richard Taylor
.
After the war, he was elected Governor of South Carolina, serving from 1876 to 1879. After that, he served two terms as a
U.S. Senator
, from 1879 to 1891.
