The regiment was commanded at Gettysburg by Colonel Adin B. Underwood, an attorney who had served as Captain in the 2
nd
Massachusetts. It brought 562 men to the field, losing eight men killed and 36 wounded.
In the growing dusk of July 2, 1863, the 33
rd
Massachusetts waited behind a stone wall for Avery’s North Carolinians. “My regiment opened a severe musketry fire on them, which caused gaps in their line and made it stagger back a little,” reported Col. Adin Underwood. Finally, the rebels retreated, “leaving great heaps of dead and wounded just in front of us.”
The monument is located on Slocum Avenue at the intersection with Wainwright Avenue, in Gettysburg, PA, and was dedicated in 1885.
