Richard Jordan Gatling (1818-1903) was an American born inventor from North Carolina; in 1861 he patented the first Gatling gun. In 1862, he founded the Gatling Gun Company. His intentions were to invent a gun that could do the work of several men, therefore lowering the number of men who would have to be on the battlefield. The U.S. Military didn’t officially purchase Gatling Guns until 1866, though it was used in the field prior to then. Richard Gatling began selling his patents to Colt in 1870, he still remained the president of the Gatling Co, until 1897 when the company was completely taken over by Colt. Quite a number of the 1883 Model Gatling Guns were purchased by the U.S. government. The U.S. Navy found that the protective bronze jacket of this model made it especially well adapted to sea duty. It was also used in the Spanish American War and the government of Canada also purchased several of this model and used them during the Riel Rebellion of 1855. The Gatling Gun revolutionized warfare.
